"Wear A Collar"

Getting started

The key to having your dog wear a collar is to help them get comfortable with the collar itself. Never use chock, prong, shock, citronella or ultrasonic collars. These types of collars are inhumane and can inflict unnecessary pain on your dog.

Follow these steps when teaching your dog to wear a collar

• Start by simply showing your dog the collar

• Every time they sniff it, say “Yes” and give them a treat

• Once your dog is comfortable sniffing the collar, you can start to put it on them. To do this, grab a handful of treats, make the collar really loose, loop the collar over your dog’s head with one hand, and feed them treats with your other hand

• If your dog is ok with the collar around their neck, continue feeding them treats, and tighten the collar while they’re chewing

• By feeding your dog treats throughout the process, you will help them continue to develop a good association with wearing a collar

Pro tip

If your dog isn’t food motivated, substitute treats for a toy, petting or praise.
