"Use A Leash"

Getting started

The key to having your dog use a leash is to help them get comfortable with the leash itself.

Follow these steps when teaching your dog to use a leash

• Start by simply showing your dog the leash

• Every time they sniff the leash, say “Yes” and give them a treat

• Once your dog is comfortable sniffing the leash, you can clip the leash to their collar or harness

• To help your dog develop a good association with the leash, give them treats while clipping the leash to their collar or harness

Pro tip

If your dog isn’t food motivated, substitute treats for a toy, petting or praise.
