Why teach "Roll Over"

  • Bonding

Practicing different behaviors is an easy way to strengthen the bond between you and your dog

  • Rewarding

Learning new cues and tricks can be fun and rewarding for dogs, and "Roll Over" is no exception

  • Redirecting

Teaching your dog to "Roll Over" can be used to redirect their energy when they're overexcited or anxious

"Roll Over"

Follow these steps when practicing "Roll Over"

• Have your dog lie down in front of you

• Grab a treat and hold it between your middle and pointer finger

• Slowly bring the treat over your dog's shoulder so that your dog has to lie on their side to get the treat

• Once your dog is lying on their side say "Yes" and give them the treat

• Once your dog is reliably lying on their side, you can have them roll over by bringing the treat over your dog's shoulder towards their backbone and delivering the treat on the other side of your dog

• To introduce the verbal cue say "Roll over" right before you lure your dog into the roll

• With practice, your dog will anticipate the lure and start to roll as soon as they hear "Roll over!"

Pro tip

If your dog isn’t food motivated, substitute treats for a toy
