Pee Pad Training
Training your dog to use indoor pee pads can be very handy, especially if you work long hours outside of the home. Pee pad training can be done painlessly with some smart management tools and a bit of thoughtful attention.
How to pee pad train your dog
• Determine the “Go spot” and set-up the pee pad there. Visit the spot often by walking or carrying your dog to the pee pad.
• Reward heavily. When your pup goes on the pee pad, reward them with an extra special reward! Think great treats and tons of verbal praise. Make sure to give it to them after they go, not while they’re going — you don’t want to distract them!
• Minimize opportunities for mistakes by taking your dog to the pee pad often and using a gate, crate, or pen to limit their access to your home.
• Learn to spot when a pee or poop is about to happen and take your dog to the pee pad immediately. Spinning and excessive sniffing are common signs that your dog needs to go out.
• Use an enzyme cleaner to clean up. It is necessary to use an enzyme cleaner to clean the areas where your dog has accidentally gone to the bathroom off the pee pad. Enzyme cleaners use natural enzymes to break down the organic matter in your dog's urine or poop.
• Refrain from scolding. Mistakes will happen and scolding often does more harm than good
• Be patient and realistic. House training can take months, but your hard work will pay off!
