Why cats jump and counter surf
• Natural behavior. In the wild, cats love to climb on trees, jump from spot to spot, and seek out high places to steer clear of predators. Cats bring these instincts into our homes and that's why we see behavior like jumping and counter surfing.
• Curiosity. Cats are naturally curious animals, and they may jump onto counters to explore their surroundings, investigate new scents, or simply because these elevated spaces pique their interest.
• Food. Cats may counter surf because they are naturally drawn to the scent and potential availability of food on kitchen counters, tables, or other elevated surfaces.
What to do if your cat jumps on counters and table tops
• Make sure your countertops are always clear of food scraps and other food crumbs. The presence of food will increase your cat's curiosity and lead to counter surfing.
• Provide your cat with options other than jumping on your counter. This could be a cat tree, chair, wall hammock or even a bar stool. Essentially anywhere that's high up and you're comfortable having your cat hang out.
• Enrichment. Ensure your cat's environment is enriched with toys, scratching posts, and opportunities for play and mental stimulation. This can help divert their attention away from counters and provide an outlet for their natural curiosity and energy.
