Why practice positive reinforcement based training

  • Builds Trust

Positive reinforcement training not only creates an enjoyable learning experience for your pet, but also fosters a positive and trusting environment.

  • Reduces Stress & Fear

Unlike punishment-based training methods, positive reinforcement training avoids causing fear or stress in pets. It promotes better welfare for your pet, and can reduce the risk of anxious or aggressive behavior.

  • Motivates & Encourages

Positive reinforcement motivates pets to exhibit desired behaviors and learn new skills through rewards like treats, verbal praise, and playtime, making training engaging and enjoyable for your pet.

What is positive reinforcement based training

Positive reinforcement-based training is a training method that centers around rewarding desired behaviors to encourage their repetition. Positive reinforcement does not use punishment.

Who uses positive reinforcement based training

Positive reinforcement-based training is not only endorsed by Petcademy (where we exclusively practice and promote this method) but also by numerous respected organizations, including the American Veterinary Society of Animal BehaviorASPCA, and the Humane Society of the United States. These organizations advocate for positive reinforcement methods because they prioritize better animal welfare, granting animals more consent and control in their lives, all while providing necessary guidance and boundaries.

How positive reinforcement based training works

At the core of positive reinforcement is the 'reinforcer' or reward, which can be a treat, praise, playtime, access to something they love, or distance from something scary. When your pet performs a behavior you want to see again in the future, you provide the reward, increasing the likelihood of that behavior being repeated.

How to start training using positive reinforcement based methods

1. Choose the right rewards. Select the rewards based on what your pet finds rewarding, such as treats, toys, or praise. These rewards will serve as powerful motivators during training sessions.

2. Use a clicker or marker word. Use a clicker or a marker word (like "Yes!") to signal to your pet that they've done something right. This helps them understand which behavior is being rewarded.

3. Be consistent and timely. Timing is crucial in positive reinforcement. Reward your pet immediately after they exhibit the desired behavior and you use your clicker or marker word. The sequence should be: desired behavior, clicker or marker word, delivery of reward. This helps them connect the reward with the behavior you want.

4. Select simple commands. Begin with basic commands like “Touch”, "Sit," and "Down.” These are foundational behaviors and a great place to start your training journey.

5. Keep training sessions short and positive. Aim for 10-15 minute sessions filled with fun and rewards.
